DIY - Bias Tape Maker

Hi!  This post is to share my recent discovery when I came across a bias tape maker in Susie Can Stitch.  I''m still learning to sew and seeing the cute little bias tape maker she have...make me want to have one too!...even though I haven't decide what to do with bias tape...but making them looks so much fun.

Since I don't have a bias tape maker...so, I just sort of 'make' one.... This is how I do it...

Material : Craft cutting blade, some fabric straps, hair straightener (yup...)

These are what I have on hand
a common craft cutting blade..

Prepare some fabric straps... you should cut yours in bias grain for actual bias tape!
(Mine are just normal fabric scrap...not a bias grain one..
This post is mean to demo how the cutter case works as a bias tape maker)

Remove the end of the cutting blade

Remove the blade inside as well

Fold your fabric strap whichever way you want to bias tape to be...

Insert the strap into the blade casing

A needle to push it will be helpful

Pull the strap from the tip...

Here comes the bias tape!!!

Use the thinner casing just the same way to product thinner bias tape

Easy Peasy...Quick!

Firm the shape with a hair straightener

What do you think?
Will you try this?
Let me know if this is useful!

Thanks for stop by...

Love
PC

    ReplyDelete
  34. that is brilliant, I use yards of bias tape (up to 10) in one go on my aprons... I rarely make my own because it is so time consuming! but this tip looks quick...

  39. This is genius!! I do use bias tape makers and have for years. JUST two days ago I ordered 2 new sizes and now I see this. hahaha!
I also have a hair straightener I keep with my iron. I have not used it for this yet but thought it might be very similar to those little bias tape machines they have out there!
I usually spray my bias strips with spray starch and iron before running through the gadget. It makes nice, crisp tape!

  42. There are Dollar stores which sell these cutters @ 6 for $1! Brilliant. But a hair straightener isn't necessary. Just set your iron down and pull the bias strip under it.

  47. I just made some bias tape this evening with the "fold it over and burn your fingers ironing it" method. OK, so I used a stiletto and didn't really burn my fingers, but it still was a pain. I can't wait to use your idea for my next quilt binding. Genius!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hmmm this is a very good idea! I can't justify buying a bias tape maker since I don't use it that often. Thanks for providing us with a cheaper alternative that works just as well!
